On Friday, the parliamentary parties signed a joint declaration with the Popular Party (PP), which has been competing with the socialists for political power in Spain.
The PP remains under the influence of the Catholic Church, and some fear that the country has been divided politically into "two Spains," according to news reports. With the loss, some citizens question whether the country could survive losses financially or otherwise.
"The slowing of the economy is widespread across Europe," said Rosa Cabellerro, an insurance worker living in a Madrid suburb.
