President Bush is pushing for more money from Congress this week.
During an appearance at the White House, Bush asked Congress to give more than $700 million to lessen the impact of rising food prices worldwide.
Escalating costs are leading to widespread hunger and social unrest, claims Bush. His plan is part of a $70 billion war funding measure which was sent to Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Bush said America will spend $5 billion on food aid and related programs between this year and the next.
"In some of the world's poorest nations, rising prices can mean the difference between getting a daily meal and going without food," he said.
